Looking for hands-on construction experience that will lead to a job? Learn carpentry, cabinetmaking, electrical wiring, or solar installation while building an actual house.
Each year in CR’s Construction Technology program, students from multiple certificate tracks come together to build a house from the ground up. With a design from CR’s Drafting Technology students, Residential Construction students lay the foundation, build the floor, walls, roof, doors and windows.
The Electrician Trainees then come in to wire the house. Cabinetmaking students design, create and mount custom cabinets and the Solar Technology students install the hot water heater and solar panels. At the end of the year, we put the house on the market and use the proceeds to buy the lot for next year’s students. You can’t get more hands-on than this!
Both of the Solar Technician Certificates fully prepare students for the California Solar Technician certification examinations for solar technicians.
The Electrician Trainee Certificate fully prepares students for California certification examinations for electrician licensing.
Master the skills you need to succeed in the residential construction field as you get your hands dirty building a house!
Work with your hands to create functional, fine-looking cabinetry and other millworks to add to the interior of the student built house.
Do you want job security and career growth? Solar technology will be the fastest growing job market in the United States over the next decade. Get a jump on your future in our Solar Technology program.
Get your electrician trainee card and work side-by-side with a licensed electrician as you wire the student built house.
"My advice to students who want to be successful is to understand that you can never completely master this trade because there's so much to it and it is constantly changing. But, approach it with the intent to master it and never stop learning and bettering yourself."
"We can all do this!” That’s my teaching philosophy and my class motto. Through many generations, in many cultures, people have learned to work with wood - from raw timbers to finished furniture. There is math, chemistry, law, physics, etc. baked into what we do. It is a lot to learn but anyone can do it. The older teach the younger and it continues on."
